History

Historical Context

In December 2008, Israel launched Operation Cast Lead, a three-month Gaza campaign that employed precision-guided munitions to eliminate senior Hamas commanders. The Israeli Air Force dropped more than 1,400 bombs, reportedly killing 1,400 militants and destroying 200 Hamas infrastructure sites, according to the Ministry of Defense. On October 19 2026, the IDF and Shin Bet used similar precision strikes to kill Tamer Mohammad Ibrahim Al-Zabaq, a Hamas operative involved in Shani Louk’s abduction. These targeted killings underscore Israel’s reliance on surgical airpower to deter cross-border attacks, while prompting heightened civilian-harm concerns and diplomatic pressure worldwide.
