iPhone Duo Debuts with a Deferred One-Handed Use Feature

By Drooid · · How we work

Launch and Immediate Limitations

Apple released the iPhone Duo on Friday, introducing a dual-screen design that is wider than any current iPhone. In its initial software rollout, the device lacks a one-handed navigation aid that many users expect for large phones. Apple has confirmed that the missing functionality, called Reachability, will be added later this year.

Reachability’s History and Planned Change

Reachability first appeared on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in 2014, allowing users to swipe down at the bottom of the screen so the interface shifted vertically toward the thumb. The upcoming version for the Duo will modify the gesture so content moves horizontally, enabling easier access to the left or right edges of the display. Julian Chokkattu of WIRED reported that Apple’s redesign aims to help people with smaller hands reach both sides of the screen with a single tap.

Official Position and Timeline

Apple’s product team has stated that the horizontal Reachability update is slated for release “later this year,” after the Duo’s launch. The company frames the addition as a response to feedback about the device’s width and the difficulty of reaching UI elements on the outer edges.

User Experience Concerns

Reviewers have noted that the Duo’s interface currently favors right-handed interaction. Chance Miller of 9to5Mac observed that the layout makes it harder for left-handed users to tap items near the left edge, a problem the forthcoming feature is intended to mitigate. Some early adopters expressed worry that the larger dual screens could impede one-handed use until the update arrives.

Outlook

When the horizontal Reachability feature is delivered, it should broaden the Duo’s accessibility for users with smaller hands and balance the device’s right-handed bias. Until then, owners will need to rely on two-handed operation or wait for the software enhancement later in the year.
