Google Extends Gemini AI Assistant to Apple CarPlay

By Drooid · · How we work

Background: Gemini’s Rollout on Android Auto

Google introduced its Gemini AI conversational assistant to Android Auto about a year ago, positioning it as a hands-free way to interact with Google Maps while driving. The initial launch emphasized multi-step queries—such as asking for destination recommendations and then receiving turn-by-turn directions that avoid toll roads. Personal-intelligence features that let Gemini draw on Gmail, Calendar, Photos, YouTube and Search were later announced for Android Auto and vehicles with Google-built infotainment systems.

How the CarPlay Integration Works

The new update makes Gemini available to Apple CarPlay users in the United States, with Google indicating a global rollout is forthcoming. Drivers can activate the assistant by tapping a Gemini icon within the Google Maps app on the car’s infotainment screen. Once engaged, the voice assistant can answer multi-step navigation questions, report traffic disruptions, and provide information about nearby stops and points of interest—all without requiring the driver to look away from the road.

Official Position from Google

The company has not confirmed whether the personalization capabilities that access user data from other Google apps will be included in the CarPlay version. A request for clarification has been sent to Google for follow-up.

Potential Impact on In-Car Navigation

By bringing Gemini to both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Google aims to offer a consistent, AI-driven experience across the two dominant smartphone-to-car platforms. The feature could reduce driver distraction by allowing more natural, spoken interactions with navigation software. However, the absence of personal-intelligence integration on CarPlay may limit the assistant’s usefulness for users who rely on cross-app context, at least until Google provides further updates.
