History

Historical Context

During the October 1973 Yom Kippur War, Israel’s assault on Suez—culminating in the Battle of Suez on October 24-25—ended in a heavy urban ambush that left 80 Israeli soldiers dead and 120 wounded, just as a UN Security Council cease-fire took effect on October 23. The costly fight reinforced Israel’s dependence on U.S. emergency aid, a link echoed in today’s Hegseth-Netanyahu meeting.
