History

Historical Context

After leaving office in 1977, former President Gerald Ford faced several public health episodes—he received a left-knee replacement at Eisenhower Medical Center in April 1990 and was fitted with a pacemaker during an August 2006 Mayo Clinic stay. These later incidents echo earlier presidential health concerns, such as Jimmy Carter’s 2006 visit to Ford, fueling media focus on leaders’ medical transparency.
