Summary

Story summary

U.S. President Donald Trump announced a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi.
Trump said the summit would focus on nuclear weapons and denuclearisation, not the Ukraine war.
No government has formally confirmed the summit or set a timetable.
SIPRI reports Russia has about 4,400 warheads, the United States 3,700, China 620.
Experts say without a New START successor, a trilateral meeting cannot produce a binding pact.

History

Historical Context

In April 2010 President Obama and President Medvedev signed the New START treaty in Prague, capping each side’s deployed warheads at 1,550 and establishing a ten-year verification regime that entered force on 5 February 2011. After its 2026 expiry and Russia’s 2023 suspension, Trump’s proposed US-Russia-China summit echoes the 2010 effort but offers no binding replacement, raising NATO and UN concerns about verification gaps.
