History

Historical Context

The 1992 Road Traffic Offenders Order authorized unattended speed cameras; by 1995 charity Brake supported their rollout, and Safety Camera Partnerships later cut personal-injury collisions by 22% (2005). A 1999 penalty revenue of about £100 million shows their impact. The 2024-25 illegal 189 mph rides of motorcyclist Amin Belechguer on the A406 highlight why automated enforcement remains vital.
