History

Historical Context

In 1990, Egypt dispatched roughly 35,000 troops to Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War, bolstering the coalition against Iraq. President Hosni Mubarak secured parliamentary approval, while King Fahd’s government pledged $1 billion for logistics, and the United Nations sanctioned the operation. Today’s request by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to send forces mirrors that 1990 deployment, as Egypt again seeks to protect Saudi security, resources, and holy sites. Repeating the precedent suggests Egypt will deepen its strategic alliance with Riyadh, potentially reshaping regional power balances and influencing future parliamentary debates.
