History

Historical Context

In 2002, Hall of Fame center Mike Webster died at 51, forcing the NFL to confront long-term brain injury risks. Boston University neuropathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu found over 3,000 tau protein tangles in Webster’s brain, a discovery later referenced by Harvard’s 2022 linemen health study. Allen Bailey’s 2026 death at 37 and his foundation’s youth camps mirror Webster’s legacy, underscoring persistent health worries for NFL linemen. The NFL’s new concussion protocols and expanded player-health funding aim to curb premature deaths and bolster community programs.
