Summary

Story summary

Russia’s Kosmos 2612 satellite approached ICEYE-X36, reducing separation from 350 km to under 5 km.
By early Oct 16, 2026, LeoLabs estimated the closest approach at roughly 500 meters, with some analyses suggesting 26 meters.
ICEYE said it is monitoring the maneuver and its constellation design ensures continuity and resilience.
LeoLabs noted the maneuver could enable intelligence collection, inspection, coercive signaling, interference, or counter-space actions, but not prove hostile intent.
RUSI reported possible intimidation or jamming motives, and similar Russian satellite passes occurred in May 2026.

History

Historical Context

In January 2007 China destroyed its FY-1C weather satellite with a kinetic kill vehicle, generating over 3,000 trackable debris pieces—the largest debris field ever recorded. The debris later struck Russia’s BLITS satellite in 2013, illustrating long-term risks. Russia’s recent Kosmos-2612 maneuver near ICEYE-X36 revives those concerns and fuels UN calls for binding space-traffic rules.
