History

Historical Context

The NFL’s first regular-season game at London’s Wembley Stadium occurred on October 30, 2005, when the Miami Dolphins defeated the New York Giants 20-14. Commissioner Paul Tagliabue highlighted the 85,000-spectator crowd, noting a $2 million revenue boost for the league’s international expansion in its inaugural season. Today, C.J. Stroud’s 312-yard, three-touchdown performance and Nick Caley’s 10.5% explosive-play rate echo the heightened spotlight on quarterbacks first showcased in that 2005 London matchup. The 2005 success cemented Wembley as a recurring NFL venue, paving the way for future overseas contests that amplify player contracts and global fan engagement.
