History

Historical Context

After the 2000 presidential race hinged on Florida’s 537-vote margin and the Supreme Court’s Dec 12, 2000 Bush v. Gore halt to a manual recount of roughly 5,000 disputed Palm Beach ballots, states tightened vote-counting rules. Kansas now sees a record early-voting surge, with Johnson County reporting 38,000 in-person votes and a 350-worker recount plan, echoing the 2000 focus on rapid ballot processing.
