History

Historical Context

In 1977 India joined the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, allowing its monuments to be listed. The 1983 inscription of the Ajanta Caves—India’s first World Heritage Site—set a conservation pattern managed by the Archaeological Survey of India. Following that legacy, the 2024 tentative list adds the Baratang Karst-Mud-Volcano Complex, Barren Island and Sirpur Cultural Landscape, among India’s 81 tentative sites and 45 inscribed sites.
