History

Historical Context

The Oct 17 2026 collapse of a crucifix in Guayaquil recalls the Oct 17 1989 Loma Prieta quake, which struck the San Francisco Bay Area with a 6.9 magnitude, killing 63 people and causing about $6 billion in damage. That disaster spurred nationwide seismic-retrofit programs, including federal funding for seismic retrofits, shaping today’s mandatory load-bearing inspections for churches.
