History

Historical Context

The 16 December 2012 gang-rape of Jyoti Singh (“Nirbhaya”) triggered nationwide protests and a Verma Committee that received about 80,000 suggestions. Its recommendations produced the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act of 2013, creating six new fast-track courts for rape cases. Echoing that reform push, Kanpur officials now use CCTV footage and public petitions after Biru Singh Bhadauriya’s death to demand stronger policing.
