History

Historical Context

The 2015 Chennai floods, triggered by unprecedented monsoon rains in November 2015, inundated the city and killed over 500 residents under Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. The Indian Meteorological Department recorded 490 mm of rain in 24 hours, and the National Disaster Management Authority coordinated relief while the Tamil Nadu government allocated INR5 billion. Today's school closures across Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and other districts echo that 2015 crisis, prompting officials to suspend classes amid flood warnings. Repeated monsoon extremes highlight the need for upgraded drainage, stricter building codes, and sustained investment to prevent future educational disruptions.
