Polish Women Stage Nationwide Protests Over Abortion Access

By Drooid · · How we work

Nationwide Demonstrations

On Thursday, women organized street protests in more than 20 Polish cities and towns, demanding free and legal abortion services. The rallies followed a photo-documented demonstration in Warsaw on July 23, 2024, where participants carried signs from a women’s rights organization and a pro-LGBT+ flag. Protesters accuse Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s liberal coalition of failing to deliver on its promise to relax Poland’s restrictive abortion laws, even after the Sejm passed two bills aimed at easing the rules.

Legislative Context and Government Response

Poland’s abortion law, unchanged since 1993, permits termination only for severe fetal abnormalities, threats to the mother’s life or health, or pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. The previous Law and Justice (PiS) government tightened the law in 2020 by banning abortions for fetal defects. In 2024, the Tusk administration introduced measures to prevent hospitals from refusing legal abortions on religious grounds, acknowledging that the conservative President Karol Nawrocki is likely to veto the parliamentary bills.

Activist Criticism and Grassroots Initiatives

Reproductive-rights activist Zofia Marcinek of the Abortion Dream Team argues that the government’s promises constitute “disinformation,” misleading women about the availability of care and driving them to seek late, costly, and unsafe services. In response to limited legal options, the Abortion Dream Team opened an “abortion clinic” across from the parliament in 2025 and launched a parcel-locker dispenser called “Abortomat,” operated by the international feminist non-profit Women Help Women, allowing women to collect pills the next day.

Hospital Abortion Statistics

According to data from the national health fund, Polish hospitals performed 573 abortions in the first half of 2026, compared with 452 abortions in the entire year of 2022, before Tusk assumed office. Activists contend that tens of thousands of abortions occur annually outside hospitals, a claim attributed to Marcinek.
