Historical Context

In the 2003 Israeli legislative election, the Supreme Court of Israel reinstated the Balad party after the Central Elections Committee attempted its disqualification. Balad, representing Arab citizens, ultimately secured three of the Knesset’s 120 seats, while Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s Likud coalition retained 38 seats. The 2026 elections echo that precedent, as Israel’s Supreme Court again overturned the Central Elections Committee’s ban on the Joint List and Ra’am, preserving Arab participation.
