The Attack at Silver Rail Elementary
Last week, a 16-year-old gunman entered Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, and opened fire in a classroom around 1 p.m. The assault resulted in the deaths of three children—ages 5, 8 and 11—and a 25-year-old teacher. A bystander later shot and killed the suspect after seeing him fire at a truck and enter the school. Police say the shooter was engaged by another teacher who wrestled for his weapon before the bystander’s intervention.
Teacher Becky Drury’s Experience
Becky Drury, the surviving teacher, recounted that she heard a noise, investigated, and saw the shooter before attempting to close the door. Drury described severe injuries to both arms and explained that she pretended to be dead in hopes the gunman would not fire again.
Police Investigation and Weapon Details
Bend Police officials confirmed the weapon was a legally purchased Maverick 88 pump-action 12-gauge shotgun loaded with birdshot, buckshot and slugs. Senior law-enforcement sources indicated the shooter’s mother bought the gun in August, around his birthday. Detectives have executed search warrants at the suspect’s home and seized his electronic devices and social-media accounts. The motive remains under investigation, with officials examining possible exposure to “nihilistic violent extremism” material online.
Community and School District Response
The Bend-La Pine Schools district resumed classes the following day, though Silver Rail remained closed for repairs. District officials highlighted student-created artwork and messages of love aimed at supporting the community. Identified victims include 5-year-old Rhoam Summer and teacher Megan Lambert.
