Flooding in Southern France Leaves at Least Four Dead as Storm Adam Unleashes Torrential Rain

By Drooid · · How we work

Storm Adam’s Impact on the Region

A cold low-pressure system named Adam brought heavy rain to southeastern France, moving from Occitanie toward Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. The downpours began on Monday and intensified on Tuesday, flooding streets, homes and transport routes across the Bouches-du-Rhône, Hérault and Corsica.

Casualties and Missing Persons

At least four people have died. Two women, aged 86 and 26, were found drowned in a cellar in the Bouches-du-Rhône region, and a 75-year-old man was swept away by floodwaters in Istres on Tuesday, 20 October. A second man was carried off by the Fium’orbu river while traveling in a 4×4; one survivor escaped, while the other remains missing. Authorities also report one person missing in Haute-Corse’s Ghisonaccia. One injury was recorded among residents evacuated to shelters in Mouriès and Saint-Martin-de-Crau.

Infrastructure Disruption and Emergency Measures

Roads and railway lines were halted, and tram services in Marseille were suspended. Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot posted on X that the floods disrupted transport across the region. Jacques Witkowski, prefect of the Bouches-du-Rhône department, said the water “has risen to unprecedented levels” and that emergency services were “mobilised at an exceptional level.” Dozens of residents were placed in emergency shelters, and a helicopter was deployed to search for the missing person in Istres.

Meteorological Data

Météo-France recorded nearly 400 mm of rain across the episode, including a peak of 191 mm in a single hour at the Corsican airport. The agency linked the extreme precipitation to Storm Adam, which has also caused fatalities in Spain.
