History

Historical Context

In March 2014, Russia annexed Crimea, deploying roughly 2,000 troops and seizing the strategic port of Sevastopol, sparking international condemnation. The United States, NATO, and the European Union responded with sanctions totaling $15 billion, while Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko mobilized 30,000 volunteers. Similarly, the October 2026 large-scale missile and drone barrage on Kyiv mirrors Moscow’s earlier tactic of overwhelming Ukrainian defenses with coordinated aerial strikes. The precedent of 2014’s escalation foreshadows prolonged geopolitical friction, prompting Kyiv to develop underground operations like Veles and urging global powers to reassess cyber-satellite policies.
