In 1993 India and Japan launched the Yamuna Action Plan, run by the MoEF’s National River Conservation Directorate and funded with a 17.773 billion-yen loan from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation. Phase I ended in 2003; Phase II and a phase added a 124-million-gallon-per-day plant by the Delhi Jal Board. On 22 Oct 2026 Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated INR8,941 crore works to extend connections and upgrade treatment.
