History

Historical Context

During Israel’s 2009 Operation Cast Lead, the Israeli Defense Forces launched a three-week offensive in the densely populated Gaza Strip, killing roughly 1,400 Palestinians. The United Nations reported that 13,000 homes were destroyed, 1.5 million people displaced, and the World Bank later estimated $10 billion needed for reconstruction. Today's reports of over 1,500 deaths, 90 % infrastructure ruin, and a $70 billion reconstruction bill echo Cast Lead’s current humanitarian devastation. The repeated pattern pressures the International Committee of the Red Cross, Egypt, and the United Nations Security Council to negotiate ceasefires, yet solutions remain elusive.
