History

Historical Context

In 1993, the Bombay bombings prompted India to amend the Arms Act, tightening licensing and penalties for illegal firearms. The amendment, championed by Minister of Home Affairs L. K. Advani, raised fines to 5 million rupees and introduced mandatory background checks for 1.2 million gun owners. Punjab police investigate Rahul Sharma’s 2024 Ludhiana shooting under the Arms Act, with Swapan Sharma assigning teams and naming host Akhil Joshi among eight suspects. The 1993 reforms imply that tougher enforcement may boost arrests, spur nationwide policy debates, and trigger comprehensive firearm law reviews in the coming years.
