Reported Nintendo Switch 2 Jailbreak Demonstrated via Mario Kart World

Reported Exploit and Public Footage
Online footage has surfaced showing a Nintendo Switch 2 console running the exclusive title Mario Kart World with custom racers such as Hatsune Miku and Peter Griffin. The video, posted by an X user, also displayed additional characters like Cinnamoroll and Angry Bird. The developer who created the exploit described the demonstration as a proof-of-concept that allows homebrew software and save-file backups in addition to the character mods.
Technical Overview of the Exploit
According to the jailbreak developer, the entry point for the exploit is the SmileBASIC application, which then accesses several system modules, including the filesystem module. By injecting custom code into these modules, the exploit can run non-official software within the console’s environment. However, the method does not replace the console’s kernel and therefore does not provide full system-wide control.
Limitations and Operational Constraints
The current jailbreak is tied specifically to Mario Kart World and does not constitute a system-wide unlock. It requires the exploit to be re-executed after each reboot, meaning the modification does not persist across power cycles. Because the exploit only reaches certain modules, it lacks kernel-level privileges and cannot be considered a complete custom firmware solution. The developer has framed the work as a potential starting point for further development rather than a finished product.
Potential Implications for Nintendo and Users
Since the Switch 2’s launch in 2025, Nintendo has actively pursued anti-piracy measures for the handheld console. If the demonstrated exploit evolves into a more comprehensive hack, it could challenge Nintendo’s efforts to protect its software ecosystem. At present, the limited scope of the jailbreak means that only a narrow set of functionalities—primarily modding within Mario Kart World and basic homebrew execution—are affected, leaving the broader system largely intact.
