Weekend Delivery Launch in Ottawa and Montreal
Canada Post has started delivering parcels on Saturdays and Sundays to residential addresses in Ottawa and Montreal. The rollout follows a recent public update on the Crown corporation’s restructuring efforts and marks the first time the national mail carrier offers weekend service to any Canadian cities.
Financial Context and Restructuring
The carrier remains financially strained, reporting a pre-tax loss of $482 million in the first half of 2026. Despite the loss, parcel revenue increased by 20.7 percent in the second quarter of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, while operating costs fell by $119 million. Canada Post continues to rely on federal loans to maintain operations, a situation its leadership acknowledges is unsustainable.
Expansion Plans
Canada Post intends to extend weekend delivery to Toronto in late November and to other major urban centres—including Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary—during the following year. The long-term goal is to provide weekend service to seven million households by the end of 2027. The expansion follows a new collective agreement with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) signed in June, which will remain in effect until 2030.
Official Statements & Responses
Chief financial officer Rindala El-Hage emphasized that the carrier aims to reduce its dependence on government funding as quickly as possible. Canada Post officials highlighted the early signs of recovery, noting that customer volumes have risen after a prolonged labour disruption that shut down mail service nationwide in November 2024.
