Red Weather Warning for Storm Austen

The Jersey Met Office has issued a red weather warning for wind across the Channel Islands as Storm Austen approaches. The warning signals the highest level of danger, prompting authorities to prepare for potentially severe conditions.

Forecasted Winds and Expected Conditions

Meteorologists at Jersey Met forecast very strong winds, with gusts expected to reach 75 mph (120 km/h) and the possibility of peaks up to 85 mph. The strongest winds are projected to occur early on Friday, according to the forecast.

Public Safety Measures

In response to the warning, the Government of Jersey announced that all schools will be closed on Friday. Officials have advised island residents to limit outdoor activity wherever possible and to stay informed of updates from emergency services.

Reported Property Damage

Local farmer Nikki de Gruchy, whose property suffered extensive damage in earlier storms, expressed anxiety about the upcoming impact. The La Croix Regeneration Centre, previously damaged by storms Ciarán and Goretti, also sustained further harm, including downed trees and a cattle shelter that was flipped over.

Outlook and Recommendations

Authorities will continue to monitor the storm’s progression and update the public as conditions evolve. Residents are urged to secure loose objects, follow official guidance, and remain prepared for possible disruptions throughout the day.
