Captain Sir Tom Moore’s Former Home Re-Listed at a £450,000 Discount Amid Planning Controversy

Home Returns to Market with Reduced Price

The Old Rectory in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire – the Grade II-listed seven-bedroom residence where Captain Sir Tom Moore lived with his daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore – has been placed back on the market through Michael Graham estate agents. After being withdrawn at the end of 2024, the property is now advertised on Rightmove with a guide price of £1.8 million, a reduction of £450,000 from the original £2.25 million asking price set in April 2024. The house sits on 3.5 acres, includes four bathrooms and a separate coach house currently used as a gym.

Planning Dispute and Spa Demolition

Central Bedfordshire Council instructed the Ingram-Moore family to demolish a £200,000 spa block they had added to the grounds, stating the structure conflicted with the listed status of the property. The family’s initial 2021 permission request for a smaller building was approved, but a later 2022 retrospective application for a larger C-shaped spa was rejected. The planning submission was made in the name of the Captain Tom Foundation, yet trustees of the charity later said they were unaware of the application.

Background on Captain Sir Tom and the Property

Captain Sir Tom Moore, a World-War-II veteran, became a national figure in 2020 when his garden-walk fundraising campaign raised almost £39 million for NHS charities during the COVID-19 lockdown. He was knighted later that year and died in February 2021 at age 100. The Old Rectory, an 18th-century building that received its Grade II listing in October 1952, was extended in the 19th century and bears a plaque noting a 1884 rebuild.

Official Responses and Ongoing Inquiry

The Charity Commission opened a case into the Captain Tom Foundation shortly after Moore’s death and launched a formal inquiry in June 2022, citing concerns about the charity’s management and independence from the family. The estate agents’ listing makes no reference to Captain Tom or his daughter, focusing instead on recent renovations such as a new water main and gas heating system. Hannah Ingram-Moore has expressed regret if the public felt misled by the spa construction, emphasizing that no intentional deception occurred.

These developments combine a significant price adjustment with regulatory scrutiny over the use of the charity’s name, shaping the current market and reputational context of the former hero’s family home.
