History

Historical Context

In September 2013 Arsenal shattered its transfer ceiling by paying £42.5 million for midfielder Mesut Özil, breaking the previous club record by £27 million and signalling title ambition. The 2024 signings of Brazilian Bruno Guimarães for £75 million and goalkeeper David Raya for €32 million echo that Özil-era willingness to spend heavily, challenging rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.
