History

Historical Context

In December 1998, the U.S. House Judiciary Committee voted to impeach President Bill Clinton for perjury and obstruction of justice. Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr compiled eleven volumes of evidence, and the Senate acquitted Clinton by a 55-45 vote. Similarly, in October 2024, President Donald Trump publicly scrutinized Ohio Senator Jon Husted’s physique, claiming the remarks shifted a Senate poll by eight points. Both episodes illustrate how personal attacks can dominate campaign narratives, prompting ethical debates and potentially reshaping voter perceptions in future elections.
