History

Historical Context

In 1996, Sri Lanka captured the Cricket World Cup, defeating Australia by seven wickets with a 245-run total, sparking the nation's cricket renaissance. The triumph featured Aravinda de Silva’s unbeaten 107 and a 3-run partnership, while the Sri Lankan board secured a US$1 million sponsorship boost. That historic upset parallels today's record chase, where Sri Lanka eclipsed England’s 429-4 target, Harry Brook’s 202 double-hundred, and Janith Liyanage’s winning six. The 1996 victory demonstrated that emerging teams could rewrite expectations, foreshadowing Sri Lanka’s capacity to engineer unprecedented ODI chases and reshape global cricket dynamics.
