Sentencing and Alleged Espionage
David Adrian Kercso, a 23-year-old Romanian who grew up in England, was sentenced earlier this year to 15 years in a Russian penal colony for allegedly transmitting the locations of Sochi’s air-defence systems to Ukrainian intelligence during the summer of 2024. The Federal Security Service (FSB) released a video of Kercso “confessing” to the charge, which the agency used to justify the harsh term.
Staged Arrest Video Revealed
Reuters analysis of the FSB-released footage and of court records shows the arrest scene was filmed in mid-April in a park along Sochi’s Matsesta River, months after Kercso had already been detained. The video was produced while he was held in a Russian jail, contradicting the claim that it captured his initial capture. The analysis notes that green foliage in the background indicates a spring setting, inconsistent with the timeline of his detention that began in late 2023.
Family Claims and Alleged Mistreatment
Kercso’s mother, Julia Kercso, warned him against traveling to the Black Sea coast, saying, “And he never listened to me yet.” “And he never listened to me yet.” — MOTHER The family says he was lured to Abkhazia after an online romance and that his trip back to England, scheduled for November 28, 2024, never occurred. In letters from prison, Kercso alleges he was beaten, held in isolation and tortured after being transferred from Abkhazia to Russian custody. He also contends that the televised confession was coerced.
Official Responses and Legal Commentary
The FSB maintains that Kercso transmitted military-site data to Ukrainian intelligence, a claim presented in the staged video. Russian lawyer Evgeny Smirnov, familiar with the case, said it is common for the FSB to stage dramatic arrest scenes long after suspects are detained, citing “dozens of cases” with similar practices. Kercso’s legal team has indicated an intention to appeal the conviction.
