Assistant U.S. attorney wrote to a federal judge requesting a reduced sentence for Ippolito, citing his informant value.
Federal prosecutors called Ippolito “extremely reliable” in unsealed records, but his tips never reached the trial.

History

Historical Context

The 1973 Watergate break-in, uncovered that year, triggered a national political scandal culminating in President Richard Nixon’s 1974 resignation. Special prosecutor Archibald Cox, appointed in May 1973, oversaw the release of over 1,200 secret White House tapes, exposing illicit activities. Like the ongoing calls by Tanya Brown, Alan Dershowicz, and U.S. attorneys for a new probe into the 1994 Simpson murders, Watergate’s revelations spurred demands for fresh investigations and independent prosecutors. These historic precedents show that revisiting high-profile crimes can reshape legal accountability, prompting courts to consider special prosecutors and informant credibility in future cases.
