Fire and Immediate Response
A blaze broke out in the late afternoon at Brookdale Senior Living on East Northside Drive in Clinton, a city about 10 miles northwest of Jackson. Local officials reported that flames consumed multiple wings of the facility while thick smoke rose from the roof. Firefighters from the Clinton, Jackson and Hinds County volunteer departments worked through the night, taking roughly three hours to bring the fire under control.
Casualties and Rescue Operations
Mayor Will Purdie announced that two residents—both 82 years old—were confirmed dead by Hinds County Coroner Jeramiah Howard. The fire chief, Levius Buckley, said staff evacuated about 85 residents safely, and firefighters assisted in rescuing an additional 10-15 people. At least four individuals were transported to hospitals for treatment. The remaining residents were relocated to Morrison Heights Baptist Church, where family members gathered while authorities continued secondary searches.
Investigation and Facility Response
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though Buckley noted that the building’s sprinkler system was operational at the time of the blaze. Brookdale Senior Living spokesperson Kristin Puckett expressed that the company’s staff were “heartbroken” over the deaths and emphasized ongoing support for affected residents, families and employees. Brookdale operates more than 500 senior-living communities across 41 states.
Community Impact and Historical Context
Mayor Purdie highlighted the community’s rapid mobilization, describing the collective effort as a demonstration of local resilience. The incident adds to a recent pattern of deadly fires in senior-living settings: a 2025 fire in Massachusetts claimed ten lives, and a 2024 fire in Memphis resulted in one fatality. Officials indicated that the damaged portions of the Brookdale facility will be uninhabitable for an extended period, underscoring broader concerns about fire safety in assisted-living environments.
