Historical Context

In April 1988, after an Iranian mine crippled the frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts during Operation Earnest Will, the U.S. launched Operation Praying Mantis, destroying Iranian oil platforms, frigates and fast-attack craft. The strike killed two Marine aviators and pushed Iran into a July cease-fire that ended the Iran-Iraq war, a precedent echoed today as the Revolutionary Guard Navy claims tanker damage.
