History

Historical Context

The November 4 1979 seizure of the U.S. embassy in Tehran, holding 66 Americans for 444 days, crippled Jimmy Carter’s presidency and helped Ronald Reagan win the November 1980 election. That energy-driven backlash created a template where fuel prices and foreign threats shape campaigns—a pattern echoed in Donald Trump’s 2026 Iowa rallies in Sioux City and Dubuque, mirroring Reagan’s 1980 Midwest stops.
