Etsy Bans AI-Generated Recipes and Craft Patterns, Tightens Listing Rules

By Drooid · · How we work

New Policy Bans AI-Created Functional Guides

On October 22, Etsy announced it will no longer permit merchants to sell AI-generated functional guides—cooking recipes, crochet, knitting, sewing, quilting, beading patterns, woodworking plans and other instruction manuals. Sellers must provide at least one unedited photograph of an actual finished item and are barred from posting fully automated AI listings. AI-generated artwork remains allowed if creators disclose AI use and do not claim the work is entirely handmade.

Reasoning Behind the Change

Etsy said many buyers report being unable to distinguish AI-generated content, making it a top-three barrier to shopping more frequently. Sellers have also voiced concern that handcrafted work appears alongside misleading AI items, eroding trust in the marketplace.

Expanded Use of AI Inside Etsy

While restricting AI-generated functional guides, Etsy continues to employ AI internally. The company uses AI to build more detailed shopper profiles, improve search relevance, and has partnered with OpenAI to launch a ChatGPT-based app for product discovery.

Official Statements & Responses

James Ossman, Etsy’s vice president of Customer Operations, acknowledged the company had not always responded to seller concerns about AI quickly enough and explained that real-item photos are required to prevent buyers from investing time and materials in instructions that may contain errors.

Kruti Patel Goyal, Etsy’s chief executive officer, previously defended allowing AI-generated creations alongside traditional handmade products, comparing AI tools to the difference between hand-knitting and using a knitting loom and emphasizing the importance of helping buyers understand how products are made.

Implementation Details and Enforcement

The updated Listing Image Requirements mandate that the primary image for most listings be an unedited photograph of the actual item against a real background; techniques such as cropping, lighting adjustments, or background replacement are prohibited for that image, though allowed in additional images if they accurately represent the product.

AI-generated artwork and photo editing remain permissible when disclosed, and prompt bundles continue to be prohibited as established in 2024. Etsy will add guidance to the listing form that flags AI-generated images during upload and plans to extend this detection to existing listings. Sellers may appeal removals through the Policy Violations page, though Etsy’s history of automated takedowns has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the appeals process.

Conflicting Reports & Gaps

All sources concur on the core elements of the new policy; no contradictory figures or dates appear. However, Etsy has not detailed how it will differentiate permissible AI edits from prohibited ones, nor has it set a deadline for sellers to bring existing listings into compliance.

What’s Next

Etsy intends to expand its detection and enforcement tools over the coming months, increase removals of violating listings, and develop tools to help sellers demonstrate authorship of their creations. The company will also continue its partnership with OpenAI to enhance shopping features and product discovery on the platform.
