History

Historical Context

In August 1958, under President Eisenhower’s directive, the nuclear-powered USS Nautilus, commanded by William R. Anderson, completed Operation Sunshine’s submerged transit of the North Pole, navigating 96 hours beneath the ice using an inertial navigation system. The feat proved Arctic under-ice mobility for nuclear submarines, a capability the UK Defence Committee now cites as lacking in its own fleet.
