History

Historical Context

In August 1994, acting commissioner Bud Selig oversaw a 232-day strike that cancelled the World Series—the first cancellation since 1904—and cost owners about $580 million in revenue. The dispute, rooted in owners’ salary-cap push and the Expos’ collapse after their 74-40 lead, left baseball wary of payroll spikes. Today, the Dodgers’ trade of pitcher Tarik Skubal reflects that lingering caution as clubs balance multimillion-dollar contracts.
