History

Historical Context

On 5 March 1985, President Ronald Reagan sat beside Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show, marking the first sitting U.S. president to appear on a late-night comedy program. The broadcast attracted roughly 30 million viewers and raised an estimated $2 million for the American Cancer Society’s research fund. Today, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Liverpool Mayor Steve Rotheram replicated that model by filming a Stand Up To Cancer segment inside 10 Downing Street for Channel 4’s Gogglebox. Such high-profile media stunts blend politics with philanthropy, prompting debate over governmental focus while potentially channeling millions toward cancer research initiatives.
