History

Historical Context

Title IX, enacted June 23, 1972, barred sex discrimination in any federally funded school program; at that time women comprised 42 percent of college students. A 1974 attempt by Senator John Tower to exempt revenue-generating sports failed, yet the law became synonymous with athletic equity. The recent ejection of reporter Britt McHenry from a Wizards-Bucks game illustrates that mandates alone have not eliminated gender bias in sports media.
