History

Historical Context

In May 1998, India conducted six underground nuclear detonations at Pokhran, asserting strategic autonomy and reshaping global security dynamics for the first time since 1974. The Indian government, led by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, secured a $1.2 billion defense pact with the United States, bolstering indigenous missile programs. Today, Narendra Modi invokes legacy at the NDTV World Summit, branding the Congress as a “parasite” while pledging 300 GW capacity and a Fast Breeder Reactor milestone. The echo of Pokhran’s assertiveness pressures the Supreme Court, Rahul Gandhi, and the United Nations to confront India’s expanding geopolitical posture and domestic dissent.
