History

Historical Context

During the Cold War, Canada opened Camp Gagetown in 1956, establishing a 274,000-acre training area that became the Commonwealth’s primary armoured and artillery range. The 1995 Gagetown explosion detonated 150 tonnes, killed two soldiers and triggered nationwide safety reforms. In 2026 a grenade-launcher fire at CFB Wainwright injured 27 troops, leading Mark Carney to deploy a 50-person CFNIS team.
