History

Historical Context

In October 1903 the Boston Americans defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3 in the first modern World Series, a best-of-nine contest arranged voluntarily by league presidents Ban Johnson and Harry Pulliam. The series gave the new American League legitimacy and showed that championship revenue could boost small-market clubs. That precedent underlies today’s Brewers and Rays use of digital ticket sales to expand fan engagement.
