Historical Context

Approved by the Union Cabinet in September 1996, the three-corridor Delhi Metro began construction on 1 October 1998 under the autonomous Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee inaugurated the Red Line on 24 December 2002, completing Phase I’s 64.75 km, 59-station network ahead of schedule and on budget. The model now guides Karnataka minister Krishna Byre Gowda’s push for Bangalore’s Pink Line and urges courts to fast-track environmental clearances.
