History

Historical Context

After WWII, newly independent states urged UNESCO to curb cultural loss, resulting in the 1970 Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing Illicit Trade of Cultural Property, adopted 14 November 1970. India’s Culture Minister Humayun Kabir invoked the treaty to recover 1,200 stolen items, including 650 idols returned 2012-2024. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Vijayadashami appeal in Delhi reinforces the convention’s relevance today.
