Core Event: Red Notice and Extradition Request
Delhi Police filed an Action Taken Report (ATR) before Judicial Magistrate Deepakshi Rana of the Saket court, stating that a formal extradition request for Russian national Viktoriia Basu has been sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs for processing through the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Moscow. The same ATR confirms that an Interpol Red Corner Notice has been issued to facilitate international tracking of Basu, who is the main accused in an FIR registered by her estranged husband, Saikat Basu.
Background: Custody Dispute and Reported Travel
Saikat Basu married Viktoriia Basu in 2017. Their son was born on October 29, 2020. After the marriage broke down, Viktoriia sought full custody in 2023. The Supreme Court of India, in May 2025, ordered a shared-custody arrangement, granting each parent three days per week, extending Viktoriia’s visa and directing police vigilance at her residence. On July 7, 2025, Saikat informed the court that Viktoriia had gone missing with the child, prompting a search and involvement of the Ministry of External Affairs.
Separate complaints recorded that on March 13, 2023, Viktoriia and her mother, Olga Zhigalina, left their home, allegedly abandoning the child and exposing him to health risks. Travel records cited by police indicate that Viktoriia and the child entered Nepal through Birgunj on July 11, 2025, though investigators suspect a jungle route aided by a co-accused, Samir Ansari.
Official Statements & Responses
Delhi Police, in the ATR, noted that documents submitted by Saikat Basu are still under scrutiny and that investigators have sought additional time to file a final report. The police also reported that they have approached Yash Raj Films for information on a co-accused named Natasha.
The embassy also mentioned that officials Albert Shtoda and Arthur Gerbst had allegedly assisted Viktoriia in arranging a vehicle when she disappeared.
