Meghan’s Distress Over New Allegations

The Duchess of Sussex said she is “deeply distressed” after media reports revealed that her half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., alleged the discovery of a large collection of child-sexual-abuse images at their father’s former residence in the Philippines. In a statement released through her spokesperson, Meghan emphasized her concern for any children who may have been harmed and reiterated that her decision to limit contact with her father was driven by the desire to protect her own children.

Earlier Police Alert and Family Estrangement

Meghan was first made aware of “disturbing allegations” against Thomas Markle Sr. in 2018 when the Metropolitan Police’s Royalty and Specialist Protection unit sent her a letter that was later shared with her. The letter, which the police said was under investigation, reached her in the summer following her wedding. The duke’s estrangement from his father dates back to his absence from the wedding on health grounds; he has never met his grandchildren, Prince Archie (seven) and Princess Lilibet (five).

Claims by Thomas Markle Jr. and Response from Thomas Markle Sr.

Thomas Markle Jr., 60, told detectives in the Philippines that he found “hundreds, if not thousands” of illicit images stored on computers and mobile phones in four large boxes at the home where his father lived until a recent move to the United States. He also reportedly contacted the FBI about the matter.

Thomas Markle Sr. denied possessing any such material. Speaking from a rehabilitation centre in Florida, where he is recovering after a leg amputation, he told the Daily Mail that the computers had not been in his possession since leaving Rosarito, Mexico, with his son in January 2025 and moving to the Philippines “for a fresh start.” He described the accusations as “sick lies” and “bullshit,” insisting he could never commit the alleged offences.

Official Statements from the Duchess and Her Father

Meghan’s statement highlighted her hope that “justice will be fully served” and that the priority remains the safety of children. She also stressed that media distortion had previously misrepresented her distance from her father. Thomas Markle Sr.’s comments, conveyed through the Daily Mail, expressed shock and hurt at his son’s allegations and reiterated his denial of any wrongdoing.

Potential Implications

The resurfacing of the 2018 police investigation alongside new claims may intensify public scrutiny of the Markle family and could prompt further law-enforcement action in both the United Kingdom and the United States. The Duchess’s emphasis on child protection underscores the personal stakes for the royal family, while the father’s denial suggests a contested factual basis that may require additional investigation.
