Toronto Police Arrest Three in String of High-Value Online Marketplace Robberies

Robberies Targeting Luxury Items and Rare Pokémon Cards

Toronto police say three suspects – 18-year-old Desmond Okuonhae and two 17-year-olds whose identities are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act – were linked to a series of violent robberies of people selling high-value goods through online marketplaces. The investigation began after a July incident in which a victim arranging the sale of a luxury watch was ambushed in Scarborough. Police later uncovered a pattern that included the theft of four rare Pokémon cards valued at about $80,000 in April and a laptop theft in March.

Investigation, Arrests and Charges

Officers monitoring a planned October meet-up in North York stopped the suspects near a bank location. The three arrived in a stolen vehicle with falsified licence plates; one fled, while the two teenagers were detained. Police seized a loaded Glock handgun with an extended magazine from one teen. The next day, search warrants led to Okuonhae’s arrest. He now faces robbery with an offensive weapon, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, in addition to separate robbery and theft charges for the laptop and Pokémon cards. The two youths face a combined 30 charges, including robbery, multiple firearm offences and breach of probation. Police allege the suspects used online aliases “Oscar Morkil,” “Max Smith,” and “Omar Clarkson” to arrange meetings. Investigators say additional victims may exist and are urging anyone with information to contact the 43 Division’s major crime unit.

Rising Value of Pokémon Cards Fuels Crime

The market for Pokémon cards has surged in the past decade, turning the collectibles into high-value assets. The emotional attachment of collectors, combined with investment motives, has driven prices to multi-million levels, making the cards attractive targets for thieves.

Police Guidance and Expert Commentary

He advised sellers to use reputable dealers or resellers and to recognize that “no location is completely risk-free,” especially when meetings are arranged near banks to convey a false sense of safety.
