History

Historical Context

In 1993, the French Football Federation stripped Olympique de Marseille of the Ligue 1 title after a €1.5 million bribery scandal officially. The investigation, led by prosecutor Thierry Tilly, imposed a €10 million fine and forced Marseille’s relegation, severely damaging its European reputation. Now, on Matchday Three of the 2023-24 UEFA Europa League, Sturm Graz defeated Marseille 1-0 as Oumar Diakité scored in the 13th minute. This recurrence signals that lingering governance wounds still impair Marseille’s continental performance, urging club officials and UEFA to prioritize transparent management reforms.
